March 2008. Miasms: Mere Theory or a Revolutionary Method of Analysis? (Vol. 12, #2)
President's Message - Remembrance of Dr. Ortega's Thoughts on the Miasms
This volume of the California Homeopath is dedicated to the miasms. It seems appropriate that my message be concentrated on one of the most internationally respected writers and speakers on this subject, Dr. Proceso Sanchez Ortega [1919-2005] of Mexico. I was just in Puebla, Mexico for the International League of Homeopathic Physicians [the LIGA or LMHI] August 6-11, 2007. This Congress emphasized the miasms and was a heart-warming tribute to the dearly loved Dr. Ortega.
Dr. Ortega was particularly emphasized because of his extremely good understanding and his loyalty to the original concepts of Hahnemann. Ortega’s Magnum Opus on this was originally published in 1980 and was called: Notes on the Miasms. In this book he delineates and expands the thoughts of Hahnemann and states:
“The ‘Miasm’ must be understood in its broadest sense as a true chronic disease, predisposing condition, or morbid constitutional state which will unfailingly give rise to the different illnesses of mankind—whether deficiency, excess or perversion—recognizable in the organic alterations as in the mental and emotional spheres.”
Or one could say: Deficiency [Psora], Excess [Sycosis] and Perversion or Destruction [Syphilis]. In addition there are colors relationships: Blue [Psora], Yellow [Sycosis] and Red [Syphilis]. There is again an expansion on Hahnemann by stating everyone has all of these miasms and can be listed by numbers as such: 1=Psora ; 2=Sycosis; 3=Syphilis. Or if a person is primary Psoric, secondarily Syphlitic and thirdly Sycotic: 132. Or if a person is primarily Sycotic, secondarily Syphilitic and thirdly Psoric: 231, etc. The most prominent medicine associated with Psora is Calcarea Carbonica. The most prominent with Sycosis is Thuja Occidentalis and Pulsatilla Nigricans. And the most prominent medicine with Syphilis is Mercurius Vivus or Solubis. Ortega has chosen especially three medicines as excellent examples of having all the three miasms present to a “ balance degree”: Lycopodium, Natrum Muriaticum and Silicea. In other words these three give good examples of all the miasms in almost all aspects from the mind, emotions, generalities, modalities, physical characteristics, etc.
One of the highlights of the entertainment aspect of the Congress was in the Teatro Principal [Main Theater, the oldest in the Americas, built in 1759]. It was taken from the original script by Rafael Degar and was performed by three couples of doctors at the Congress. The performance was original, well-acted, colorful, humorous, exciting and gave clear pictures of the three main miasms: Psora [blue] deficient, Sycosis [yellow] excessive and Syphilitic [red] destructive. A special accent of being performed in the three stratum balcony theater elicited an extraordinary response from the audience.
The session ended with some video clips on Dr Ortega. This gave more information on his thoughts and life. There was especially one section that was thought provoking. Namely, the best way to decrease evil and ignorance is not through trying to destroy them, but by enhancing and stimulating the good and truthful which by example lessens the attraction to ignorance and evil.
