An Online Forum for the Exploration of Homeopathic Theory, Philosophy & Practice

The California Homeopath is the Journal of the California Homeopathic Medical Society.  The Journal was founded in 1882 by Dr. William Boericke and Dr. W.A. Dewey.  Published in San Francisco, the bimonthly journal existed under this name until 1892, when it was replaced by The Pacific Coast Journal of Homeopathy. The California Homeopath was revived in 2006, co-edited by Richard Pitt CCH and Premananda Childs.  Our first online edition was released in January 2009.

December 2006. The Pure Science and Art of Homeopathy: A Study of Proving Methodology (Vol. 11, #2)

This edition of the California Homeopath is dedicated to the study of homeopathic provings. Where would homeopathy be without provings? Would it exist as a medical art at all? Provings are a central tenet of homeopathic philosophy and practice, the “scientific” methodology of homeopathy and the most significant expression of the genius of Hahnemann the scientist and physician.

Gleanings from the Archives of Library Homoeopathia - The American Provers Union

by William Kirtsos

Sat, Dec 02, 2006

The American Provers Union was organized as a society on August 15, 1853,and published its first pamphlet,“Suggestions for the Proving of Drugs on the Healthy.” The Provers Union’s last publication,“The Proving of Cannabis Indica,”was published in Philadelphia in 1859. In the Homoeopathic literature, little is mentioned about this society. This is also true of the American Institute of Homoeopathy’s Central Bureau of Materia Medica, which appears to be the catalyst for the American Provers Union, and other similar local societies. This article contains the complete text of the original pamphlet, “Suggestions for the Proving of Drugs on the Healthy.”

Only a small proportion of information comes this way. As homeopaths we are familiar with the life of Hahnemann, but our knowledge of Constantine Hering may often be limited to his proving of Lachesis and the picture of him on his couch where he studied and slept in his library. These excerpts from Calvin Knerr's "Life of Hering" offer another view of the author of "The Guiding Symptoms".
